LOOP GURU MEMBER STARTS NEW RECORD LABEL
4/16/2002
Elsewhen Records, founded by current Loop Guru member Sam Dodson, today officially announced the launch of a new record label concentrating on electronic and devotional music. Based in London, Elsewhen is distributed internationally by Shellshock, which is also based in England.
The first release from Elsewhen Records (http://www.elsewhen.org.uk) is THAW’s “Holy Cat,” a collaborative project from Dodson and Loop Guru’s Mad Jym on April 30,2002. The album is a fusion of sacred chant and urban shamanic trance. The sound of the chant is spliced to deep beats and weighty bass lines, resulting in a collision of ancient and modern trance music.
“The Launch of Elsewhen Records is simply my attempt to release great music that might not otherwise get heard if left to the ‘ears’ of multi-national corporate owned record labels,” said Dodson. “Elsewhen isn’t here to put profits above creativity. Elsewhen is here to make sure that there is an outlet for new music is challenging, artistic, spiritual and above all real.”
“Holy Cat” is the first collaborative new material from the Loop Guru family in five years. Loop Guru are recognized as one of the pioneers of global fusion music, picking up five Single of the Week accolades from the UK’s NME and Melody Maker newspapers and remixing a host of artists including Jean-Michael Jarre, Mickey Hart and Pop Will Eat Itself. THAW’s Dodson and Mad Jym have a long history together, predating their tenure in Loop Guru. The pair met when Dodson was part of the UK punk band The Transmitters and Mad Jym was collaborating with Genesis P. Orridge in Psychic TV.
Elsewhen’s second release is from SLIPPER, an outfit featuring Dodson and Rat Scabies of The Damned. SLIPPER’s new CD, entitled “Zoon” will be released in the coming months on Elsewhen. SLIPPER ‘s first release, "Invisible Movies” is currently available from Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label and was released in 2000.
Known as a dynamic live band, Loop Guru got their start touring Europe in small clubs as well as playing huge festivals in the Czech Republic, Greece, Germany, Holland and Portugal over the past decade. Loop Guru first came to the US in 1996 when they toured the United States from coast-to-coast with both Meat Beat Manifesto and as part of the Big Top tour across America. Big Top was a traveling electronic music festival featuring additional artists including Moby, Banco De Gaia, Eat Static and more. Loop Guru’s first West Coast appearance was at the Organic festival alongside the Chemical Brothers, The Orb, Underworld and others in 1996.
Having already played live among the great and the good, THAW is set to appear on the festival circuit this summer.
