JM NORTHERN MEDIA SALUTES 2008 FESTIVAL WINNERS

LOS ANGELES (December 30, 2008) _ JM Northern Media salutes the winners of its 2008 competitions in film, music and books. Call for entries for its 2009 competitions are now open at the various festival web sites listed below.

DIY MUSIC FESTIVAL: HAZELDEN led by frontwoman Mary Jane Snow, has received airplay on L.A. rock giants KROQ 106.7 and Indie 103.1. The group is release its first EP this month. INTERCEPT is currently compiling a tour in support of its new album, "Magnolia Road." Their singles are frequently featured on MTV and they are partnered with manga-giant TOKYOPOP. The winners were showcased at a music supervisor luncheon cosponsored by BUG MUSIC and were guests of honor at a special dinner that evening. (www.diyconvention.com)

DIY FILM FESTIVAL: The engaging documentary "BUSKERS: FOR LOVE OR MONEY,” an examination of the world of street performers as told by the talent and Best Film of the 2008 DIY Film Festival. The film was showcased at a special screening at the American Film Institute and preceded by a cocktail reception. (www.diyconvention.com)

NEW YORK BOOK FESTIVAL: EDDIE EINBINDER’S “HOW TO HAVE FUN AND NOT DIE,” a unique examination of recreation drug user as told from the user’s experience, was the grand prize winner. He was honored at a special reception at the Algonquin Hotel in New York City. (www.newyorkbookfestival.com)

HOLLYWOOD BOOK FESTIVAL: The 2008 Hollywood Book Festival named STAN LERNER’S “CRIMINAL” as the grand prize winner of its annual competition honoring books worthy of greater attention from the film, TV and multimedia industries. A graphic but page-turning account of the rise to power of the world’s most calculating and dangerous man, “Criminal” is the story of Sam Noah, who will do whatever is necessary to achieve his ends. BEACH BOOK FESTIVAL: The 2008 Beach Book Festival named DR. THIENNA HO’s “UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY OF SKIN COLOR” as the grand prize winner of its annual competition honoring the hottest reads of the summer season. The meticulously-researched book tackles the controversial question of whether skin color is fixed or can be changed to a remarkable degree without using drugs, chemicals and steroids. The book explores the world’s eons-long fascination with skin color, and provides some startling photos of people who have changed the color of their skin – including the author! NEW ENGLAND BOOK FESTIVAL: The 2008 New England Book Festival named “ANGLER: THE CHENEY VICE PRESIDENCY” BY BARTON GELLMAN as the winner of its annual competition honoring the best books of the holiday season. The book, an expansion of a Washington Post series, looks at the White House reign Dick Cheney, a man who redefined the vice presidency to a never-before-seen level of influence that ranged from war, the economy, the environment and the law. Gellman parts the curtains of secrecy surrounding Cheney in documentary fashion to show how the vice president operated and what he wrought. (www.newenglandbookfestival.com)

LONDON BOOK FESTIVAL: THE GONZO WAY: A CELEBRATION OF DR. HUNTER S. THOMPSON” written by his wife, ANITA THOMPSON, was the grand prize winner of the 2008 London Book Festival. The book, an intimate examination of the motivations and creative process of a man considered one of the great writers and journalists of the last century, reveals that the free-wheeling, drug-ingesting public caricature of Thompson hid a consuming work ethic, an insatiable quest for knowledge and, to be sure, a spiritual commitment to independent thought and action that will long endure. DIY BOOK FESTIVAL: The 2008 DIY Book Festival chose photojournalist SUSAN MADDEN LANKFORD’S “MAGGOTS IN MY SWEET POTATOES”” a stunning examination of jail life, as the winner of its annual competition honoring the best of independent publishing. Lanfkord, a professional photographer, took her camera and a tape recorder into a San Diego jail over a period of two years. Her mission was was to understand the cycle and culture of the jail experience, which is far different from the oft-told stories of prisons. Her ability to open a window on a world many know but few perceive won her the award as the outstanding book of the 2008 DIY Book Festival. (www.diyconvention.com)
