2008 DIY BOOK FESTIVAL NAMES WINNERS

LOS ANGELES (December 26, 2008) _ The 2008 DIY Book Festival has chosen photojournalist Susan Madden Lankford’s “Maggots in My Sweet Potatoes,” a stunning examination of jail life, as the winner of its annual competition honoring the best of independent publishing.

The book and its author will be honored along with other competition winners in February as part of the activities at the 2009 DIY Convention: Do It Yourself in Film, Music & Books.

Lanfkord, a professional photographer, took her camera and a tape recorder into a San Diego jail over a period of two years. Her mission was was to understand the cycle and culture of the jail experience, which is far different from the oft-told stories of prisons. Her ability to open a window on a world many know but few perceive won her the award as the outstanding book of the 2008 DIY Book Festival.
