2004 DIY BOOK FESTIVAL WINNERS

The 2004 DIY Book Festival has awarded its grand prize to author Wayne McVicker, whose "Starting Something" is the intriguing story of people caught in the spell of creating a new company.
McVicker perfectly captured the excitement, strategy and struggles of building his own venture, a battle which DIY artists and entrepreneurs face on a daily basis. He wins $1000 and a flight to Los Angeles for the 2004 DIY Book Festival Awards. which will be held Saturday, Oct. 2 at the hot new Velvet Margarita Cantina in Hollywood.
2004 DIY BOOK FESTIVAL WINNING ENTRIES
1) NON-FICTION: "Starting Something" by Wayne McVicker tells the tale of Neoforma, a company founded in 1996 in Silicon Valley before the unofficial birth of the dot-com boom. McVicker and partner Jeff Kleck rode the wave of that wild time, spawning the sixteenth most-successful IPO in history. As McVicker notes, "I made a few hundred million…I lost a few hundred million." His compelling chronicle of that unique period in time wins the category and the 2004 DIY Book Festival Book of the Year award.

2) FICTION: "She's The Girl" by Susan M. Brooks weaves a funny, ironic and genuine tale of Natalie, who loves love but has never been surprised with a thousand daisies. She decides to discover love's true meaning by embarking on the road to Ruune, North Dakota, to reunite with her high school sweetheart. She learns the hard way that love is never what it appears to be.

3) FAN FICTION: "Demon Spawn - Tales From Demon Under Glass" by Laura Baumbach offers reimagined short stories based on the screenplay by Jon Cunningham and D.L. Warner. The stories capture the adventures of vampire Simon Molinar after his escape from a government lab.

4) HOW-TO: "Art That Pays: The Emerging Artist's Guide To Making a Living" by Adele Slaughter & Jeff Kober. An update of a mid-1980s work on how to survive as an artist. The book features interviews with Matt Groening, creator of "The Simpsons," actor John Ritter and many other bold-faced names and comes with a CD providing links to valuable artist-related sites.
